Shireen Taweel considers the history of migration and pilgrimage woven throughout the Arab Science of astronomy, mathematics and technologies of celestial navigation. Her recent work follows an inquiry into the intersection of science and faith, and how this has contributed to present understandings of cosmology and technological advancement. Her research culminates in a speculative imagining of future Space travel without the colonial narratives of possession and occupation.
Cosmographic provides insight into the artist’s work in development, featuring a range of manuscripts, maps, star charts, notations, drawings, translations, photographs and maquettes. Bringing these objects together, Taweel reaches back into the history of celestial navigation to envision a decolonial futurism.
