We offer ten rent-free studios which support and facilitate the professional development of artists at all stages of their careers, from emerging to established.

The Studio Program provides artists with the space to work freely, test new ideas, engage with each other and connect with our national and international peer networks and audiences. As well as providing much-needed space for experimentation and the development of new work, the Program offers critical support through advocacy and curatorial dialogue that directly impacts artists’ careers.

Artspace has offered one–year studio residencies entirely free of rent since 2015. The 2023 redevelopment enabled us to increase our studios from 7 to 10. This year, Artspace made the decision to move towards a two-year residency model by 2026.

The contracted residency period is from June to June each year. From June 2025 to June 2026, we will support five two-year residencies and four one-year residencies. From June 2026 onwards, there will be an intake of five two-year studio residencies each year.

Each artist receives:

  • A flexible rent-free light-filled studio space of approximately 45sqm with a kitchenette and working desk

  • 24/7 studio access

  • Opportunities to participate in outreach initiatives, public programs  and targeted studio visits from nominated curators, artists and arts professionals.

  • Individual studio visits from Artspace curatorial staff for professional development throughout the year

  • Curatorial advocacy, including introductions to collectors, benefactors and local and international curators through Artspace’s peer network

  • A location in the heart of Sydney, close to peer organisations including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Firstdraft, National Art School and UNSW Art & Design

  • Universal access throughout the building, including communal spaces for connecting with peers and colleagues

  • Invitations to ‘Stop-work lunches’ and occasional group excursions with other studio artists, the Artspace team and visiting national and international peers

Our studio residents are selected via an Open Call for applications each year, which are assessed by the Artspace team, artist representatives on the Board of Directors, and an external peer from the Art Gallery of NSW. International and interstate artists are encouraged to apply but must be willing to relocate to Sydney for the duration of the residency, at their own expense, in order to fully participate in the program. As well as assessing the quality of applications in line with the selection criteria,  the selection panel will consider the cohort as a whole and aims to reflect the diversity of artistic practice across generations, career stages and art forms.

The Open Call will be announced each year. Unsolicited applications outside of the open call period will not be considered.
