Shireen Taweel is a Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist working on Gadigal Land. Her practice draws on speculative futurisms and alternative histories as a means to decolonise future cultural, political and ethical dimensions of space migration. Taweel focuses on the construction of future transcendental architecture and movement ecology informed by Arab science’s contribution of instruments of astronomy and celestial navigation. Her development and research is often site-specific as she works in collaboration with local communities, architecture and environment, experimenting with the materiality of site. Conceptual applications of artisan techniques and speculative narrative drive cross-cultural discourse and dialogues of shared histories and fluid community identities. In 2024, Taweel was awarded the 68th Blake Art Prize. Her most recent solo shows include Sacred Architecture and the Celestial Body at STATION Gallery, Sydney (2023); Shoe Bathers at Firstdraft Gallery (2022); and Switching Codes at Fairfield City Gallery (2020). Most recent group shows include STATION Australia at Art Basel Hong Kong (2024); In the Inner Bark of Trees, Archive SITES, SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin, Germany (2023); and Making Worlds, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2022). She is represented by STATION Australia and is a 2024 resident at the Carriageworks’ Clothing Store Artist Studios, Sydney.
