Brisbane artist Sandra Selig's be some other material, which was created over a three-week Artspace residency period, adds to Selig’s ongoing series of light installations involving both audio and moving-image elements. Utilising audible rhythms and darkness within given spaces as aural and visual stimuli, Selig generates beautifully subtle works.

Selig draws on the philosophies of Yoshihara Jiro, the founder of the mid-twentieth century ‘Gutai’ group of artists in Japan. Selig’s work invokes the Taoist concept that through perseverance humans can alter the substance of the world around them so that it becomes ‘live’ and apparent in new ways. In her work we see how an artist can ‘bring matter to life.’

Selig’s work consistently responds to both site and space. In addition to light and sound installations, she has produced works using such varied materials as sewing thread, spider’s silk and phosphorescent paint and wood. In 2002 Artspace presented frequency, an installation of five kilometres of sewing thread zigzagging across fifteen metres of the gallery space. Selig has exhibited extensively throughout Australia including within the last two Adelaide Biennials of Australian Art, as well as internationally. Selig’s work heart of the air you can hear recently featured within Networks, Cells and Silos at Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne. Her work is held in collections at several Australian institutions and she has participated in residencies in Tokyo, Japan and Guernsey, Great Britain. Selig lives and works in Brisbane. She is represented by Milani Gallery, Brisbane.
