Volume 2017

5 Press is an art collective based in Melbourne. It comprises five members: August Carpenter, Cheralyn Lim, Sarah McConnell, Jaime Powell and Sophie Westerman. The collective was formed so the artists would have a framework in which to explore the medium of the artist book and fine art print, particularly focusing on handmade forms and traditional techniques.

4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (4A) is an independent not-for-profit organisation based in Sydney, Australia. 4A fosters excellence and innovation in contemporary culture through the commissioning, presentation, documentation and research of contemporary art. Our program is presented throughout Australia and Asia , where we ensure that contemporary art plays a central role in understanding and developing the dynamic relationship between Australia and the wider Asian region.

Para Site is Hong Kong's leading contemporary art centre and one of the oldest and most active independent art institutions in Asia. It produces exhibitions, publications, discursive, and educational projects aimed at forging a critical understanding of local and international phenomena in art and society.

Amala Groom is a Wiradjuri conceptual artist whose practice, as the performance of her cultural sovereignty, is informed and driven by First Nations epistemologies, ontologies and methodologies. Her work, a form of passionate activism, presents acute and incisive commentary on contemporary socio-political issues. Groom seeks to create works which proactively and creatively unpack and undermine the Colonial Project, the on-going philosophy of colonialism that has imperialistically subjugated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples since 1770.

In 2015, artists Justy Phillips and Margaret Woodward founded A Published Event as an experiment in speculative eventing. Exploring chance encounter, constructed situations and the shared authorship of lived experience, our hybrid works explore ficto-critical writing, prose, book-works, video, installation, performance and the metaphysical language and speculative publishing of lived experience. We will bring the first 8 (in a series of 40 books) in our collaborative contemporary artwork, Lost Rocks (2017–21) exploring the metallurgical telling of absent Tasmanian minerals, each book re-imagining an absent mineral from a discarded rock specimen board.

Alphabet City Press is Avril Makula, an artist who works with the alphabet, numbers and music, combined with typography, colour and order in producing non-traditional books in which she employs printmaking, digital printing and a myriad of bookbinding techniques. Avril has been selected for artists book awards and exhibitions both in Australia and overseas, and is represented in collections worldwide, including the Australian National Library.

American artist Gordon Samstag famously made one of the great cultural bequests benefiting the arts in this country, enabling Australian visual artists to develop their skills and abilities internationally – through the Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Art Scholarships.

Proudly published by the Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the University of South Australia as well as 25 years of Samstag Scholarships, The Samstag Legacy: An Artist’s Bequest charts the lives and careers of Anne and Gordon Samstag, and their sixteen years of living and working in Australia and eventual return to America.

The Asia-Pacific Photobook Archive (APPA) is a not-for-profit open-access physical archive of self-published and independent photobooks. The APPA is a response to the boom in photographic self-publishing globally and is established to provide a ‘real’ way to see photobooks that would otherwise only be viewable online.

The organisation formed in response to the European and American focus of most international discourses around photography and photobooks and is committed to promoting the production and dissemination of photobooks in the region. The APPA is acutely aware of the wealth of photographic talent in the region and hopes to become a vehicle for the promotion and showcase of the material in the archive through dedicated exhibitions, publications, collaborations, symposia, and guest lectures throughout the Asia-Pacific region and internationally.

Assembly Books will showcase a selection of publications by a diverse range of artists and arts organisations, from remote, regional and metropolitan Australia, including publications and works by Warmun Art Centre, artist/writer and cultural producer Alana Hunt and arts manager/writer and curator Esther Gyorki.

The Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) is the leading national organisation dedicated to photography and new media. The ACP provides exhibition, education and community programs to engage audiences in a dynamic conversation about the role photography plays in visual culture. Founded in 1973, with inspirational exhibitions, thought-provoking public events and a comprehensive workshop program, the ACP makes a significant contribution to the constantly changing and exciting world of photography. The ACP is the publisher of Photofile, Australia’s leading photography journal since 1983.

Australian Book Designers Association (ABDA) exists to support Australian book designers – to promote their work to, and connect with, the broader publishing community. As well as celebrating established designers, we aim to discover and foster emerging talent. Through our public talks and workshops, digital showcases and the national annual Book Design Awards, ABDA provides a dynamic and inclusive network for our members.

Badlands Unlimited is a New York press publishing texts and works by artists and writers. Their latest publication is Into Words, a collection of writings by acclaimed painter Carroll Dunham. Badlands is known for their New Lovers erotica series as well as the anti-Trump protest signs, New Proverbs. They sell their books out of a retail flagship outlet store, Y.oung P.ublisher 99¢ & Up, located in a Chinatown dollar store.

Big Ego Books are Sydney-based booksellers with a curated collection of fascinating, hard-to-find, and frequently unusual titles that reflect the singular tastes and preoccupations of its creators: artists Raquel Caballero and Emily Hunt. Specialist in the extreme, Big Ego’s core catalogue encompasses Art, Design, Photography, Architecture, and Erotica. Big Ego Books launched at the Volume Art Book Fair in 2015 and continue to trade online and through social media. In 2016 Big Ego Books established an outpost at Alaska Projects, Kings Cross, bringing together contemporary art and vintage art books in (fittingly enough) an underground carpark.

Big Fag Press is an artist-run printing collective in Sydney, Australia. We have an amazing offset proof-press, called “The Big Fag”, which can produce excellent large-scale prints in limited editions, up to B1 size. Located under the light rail viaduct at Jubilee Park, Big Fag Press is run by a bunch of enthusiastic artists who love to collaborate.

China Heights Gallery is a Sydney based gallery and studio, established in 2004, exhibiting both local and international artists. The independent gallery focuses on emerging and established artists alike, producing and distributing short run books, prints, zines, and artist editions.

circle square paper is an artist-run publishing collective. We aim to use independent publishing as a means of fostering communities around issues pressing to artists, and provide a platform for artists to publish their work. We distribute our own magazine annually, as well as side publications including artist books, single edition zines, and risograph printed art books — collated and released in conjunction with our public programs. Our inaugural magazine School Book explores progressive approaches to art education, such as nomadic, imaginary, and artist-run art schools. As circle square paper, we also run public programs to expand the focus and audience for the works that we publish.

Currency Editions is an independent publishing house located in Wagga Wagga, NSW. We are focused on publishing works that examine, critique and explain the complex world we live in, striving to publish works that are socially important whilst also exploring the possibilities and relationships of print and digital medias.

Cooper+Spowart’s book works traverse both personal and political territories in the investigation and representation of an Australian “site” and “place”. Individually and collaboratively, they create visual narratives in response to, and informed by, contemporary social and environmental issues. Their book works have been acquired for the artists’ book collections in Artspace Mackay, State Libraries of Queensland and Victoria, Mitchell Library, and the National Library of Australia. Recently the artists' book You are here... was a finalist in the 2017 Vienna Photo Book Award.  Their artists’ books have been exhibited in New Zealand, UK, Europe and the United States of America.

John Ogden is a photographer, filmmaker, writer, publisher, and the creator of Cyclops Press, an independent boutique publishing house specialising in small edition art books that promote Australian photography and reconciliation. At VOLUME 2017 he will be joined by the well-known Australian photographer, Louise Whelan. Louise's work has been published by T&G Publishing, and at this exhibition she will be presenting some of her hand-made books.

Drawing on contemporary and historical print culture, Deidre Brollo makes artists books that explore ideas of memory, forgetting, and uncertainty. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is represented in a number of collections including the National Library of Australia, the State Library of New South Wales, and the State Library of Queensland.

Diane Incorporated is a really large publishing haus from Melbourne, Australia. We make books and zines with artists we really like. Sometimes they're local and sometimes they're from overseas. You've probably heard of us because we are such a prolific publicly traded company. I actually think our share price is about to go up (this isn't insider trading, just some helpful advice for those interested in making a quick buck). Buy low, sell high. We also make merchandise. We have been around since 2013 I think, maybe 2014 actually. To be honest I'm not sure.

Dissect Journal is an independent, theme-based publication that seeks to analyse the work of contemporary artists from various vantage points, refining multiple histories of contemporary art. Working out of Melbourne, Athens and Geneva, we turn to print as we believe that no text or critical approach should stand alone as an artefact. The published medium allows us to carefully and inventively juxtapose images and text, so that they can spark further discussion and debate over the nature of contemporary art and criticism. We also use Dissect to explore and extend the possibilities of writing, editing, publishing and design as artistic practices in their own right.

Douglas Lance Gibson is a Sydney based artist working primarily with the photographic medium. Veering between the staged and the observational forms of photography, Gibson’s work is focused on the self-reflexive nature of the medium, in particular photography’s relationship to truth, text and time. He has previously worked as a demolition and construction labourer, gallery assistant, chef, ski lift operator, door-to-door salesman, cotton entomological scout, design researcher, and once spent 3 months working on a pheasant farm in Wiltshire, England. His work has been exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Paris, alongside being a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2015. In 2016, he showed a selection of works from What Was Once Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow at Paris Photo, in the Grand Palais, with Tolarno Galleries. In November 2017, he will have his debut solo show at Tolarno Galleries. He is represented by Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne.

Dylan Smyth is a Newcastle-based artist primarily working in photography with a strong interest in the built environment. After completing the 2hrsnorth project to document all the Suburbs of Newcastle (& presenting this at VOLUME 2015) Dylan has been busy cataloguing everyday Australian domestic architecture with his latest print undertaking: The Suburban Project.

Frontyard is a Not-Only-Artist Run Initiative currently configured as a pro-active, multi-purpose space in Marrickville, Sydney where people come together for practical skills-sharing, critical research and survival tips.

Frontyard houses an open, non-lending library founded on our decommissioned Australia Council research library.

Éditions curates contemporary art and publishing by collaborating with artists to release collections of limited works. Éditions aims to bring their discerning collectors works from emerging and established artists in the form of new and unreleased editions, including multiples, one of a kinds, books and special editions. Our stockists include Colette (Paris), COS (Europe), Tenoversix (Dallas and LA), and a selection of international book stores, galleries and museums.

Éditions works in design and art direction through Zé Studio. The studio’s output sees them work with various institutions, brands and individuals internationally.

Published by the University  of Western Sydney, Discontinued Narratives (of Migration), is a book covering the site-specific practice of Elizabeth Day, edited by Nicholas Tsoutas. It contains essays by Dr. Anna Gibbs, Dr. Jacqueline Millner and Dr. Ann Finegan. 

Founded by Mark Gowing, Formist is a rigorous and experimental graphic design studio that champions emotional, tactile and refined solutions. In addition to our working studio model, Formist is also comprised of Formist Foundry, our commercial outlet for unique typefaces; and Formist Editions, our growing library of art and design publications that are conceived with a focus on the past, present and future.

Gillian Kayrooz is an emerging video and multidisciplinary artist from Western Sydney, Australia. Whilst currently studying at the Sydney College of the Arts, with a focus on screen arts and experimental writing, Kayrooz explores the potential to document alternative suburban identities within spaces that hold no notable structures of time. Kayrooz’s works in photography, illustration and writing are projects which relate, contrast and mimic, previous or existing video work concepts. Her experimental writing works are composed through an abstraction of image and text, specifically seen through her works material choices and processes, which challenge and parody common zine conventions.

In our artists' books, zines, prints, drawings, and collages, we use an armoury of play and lyricism, inviting you to ponder and perhaps find that things are not always as they first appear. Based in Melbourne we have been working collaboratively since 1999. Our artists' books can be found in the collections of Artspace Mackay, Deakin University Library, Melbourne Museum, Melbourne University Library, Monash University Library, MPRG, National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, National Library of Australia, RMIT University Library, State Library of NSW, State Library of Victoria, State Library of Queensland, Tate (UK), and the University of the West of England (UK).

Harry Klein is a Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist and musician who works under a performance-based practice through a range of mediums including photomedia, video and sound. While currently studying at Sydney College of the Arts, Klein has focused on a practice that studies the amalgamation of the individual and their environment. Klein often creates dark and atmospheric work that studies contemporary masculinity, creates fictional worlds and dystopic environments. Klein’s work follows his own growth as an artist in the modern world. This can be seen through the construction of portraiture and the observation of spaces.

A Los Angeles-based publishing house founded in 2014 by artists Clare Kelly and John Wiese, Hesse Press focuses on making LA’s rich art scene accessible through a series of artist monographs published each fall and spring season. We are interested in how different personalities make art, and enjoy presenting works in a recognisable and consistent series format.

Founded in 1976, Idea Books is a specialist wholesaler and distributor of books, exhibition catalogues, and DVDs on contemporary architecture, art, photography, design, fashion, and film.

The scope of Idea Books is international. We act as agents for publishers and institutions from many countries, including the Netherlands, Spain, Japan, the USA, and Australia, and we market these books throughout the world: in Europe, North America, Asia, Australasia, and in parts of Latin America and Africa.

The Institute of Modern Art (IMA) has been a leading independent space in Australia for forty years. The IMA has a longstanding commitment to research and a rich history of publishing critical readers, exhibition catalogues, and artist monographs. The IMA has a publishing partnership with Berlin based publisher and distributor Sternberg Press.

Interlude Gallery is a non-for-profit Incorporated Association founded in 2014. With sole focus on the exchange and dialogue of contemporary practice, Interlude runs as an open source organism, expanding with the invaluable participation from a dynamic group of collaborators and contributors including their stable of Mexican, US and Australian based artists, and their international writers program.

Amongst Interlude Gallery’s main objectives is the publication, distribution and presentation of the work of their writers & artists, both digitally and physically.

FACING THE LIGHT - Portraits 1983 - 2009 by John Werrett is a companion book to OUT OF THE DARK, presented at VOLUME 2015.

Kagami approaches art via the practice of ‘Concrete Comedy’. Inspired by both the environs of Tokyo as well as the work of Milwaukee-based artist David Robbins, Kagami takes the joke as his medium of choice, making mischievous use of everyday found objects, art historical references, contemporary display practices, Japanese popular culture and news media as his materials, all informed by his keen eye for design.  

For VOLUME 2017, Ken Kagami will present two public programs: Portrait Session and Sexy Art School.

Ladies of Leisure (LOL) is a community that celebrates strength, weakness, success and process. We publish zines, run workshops, parties, create films, make and sell a range of fun merchandise, and provide the tools to assist up and coming creative people in pursuit of their passions. LOL has released three printed publications (the most recent, LOL 3, was released in early 2017) that brings together female identifying voices from across the globe to explore power, vulnerability and uniting in our diversity. LOL’s community reach has expanded from print to hosting personal and professional development workshops, with a focus on creativity and mental health.

KNOWLEDGE EDITIONS is a Melbourne-based publisher and design studio that works with local and international artists and designers to producing autonomous publications that explore the role of the archive by cataloguing, collecting, documenting, and seriality. DO THE KNOWLEDGE - KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Founded by Michael Mack in 2010, following two decades working alongside legendary German publisher Gerhard Steidl, MACK is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading contemporary publishers making autonomous book works with photographers, artists and curators. While publishing the work of highly regarded photographers and artists such as Paul Graham, Alec Soth, Luigi Ghirri, Collier Schorr, Thomas Demand, Ron Jude and Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, the publisher has also made a name for helping break new talent, with several of MACK’s most popular titles featuring the work of a younger generation of photographers such a J Carrier, Christian Patterson, Joanna Piotrowska and Aleix Plademunt. 

Maddyson Hatton works primarily in print, ceramics and artists books . Her recent research focuses on censorship in Google satellite imagery and the oculars role within mapping as an instrument of power regarding sight. A fundamental process to all of Maddyson's work is blind drawing: the eye traces the image, whilst the hand traces blindly what the eye is seeing. Looking and drawing become separated, the eye does not check to verify the accuracy of the drawing.  It reaches a point where the images information becomes abstruse, unreadable and blind.

Mark Titmarsh is an artist working in painting, video, performance and text, under the rubric of expanded painting which is a form of painting that mingles illicitly with all other practices. His book Expanded Painting is published by Bloomsbury UK and receives its official launch at VOLUME 2017. The book charts the historical drive towards expanded painting and its understanding in terms of post aesthetics and the phenomenology of colour. 

Meg Hewitt was born in 1973 in Sydney, Australia. She has been selected as a finalist in the Moran Prize for Contemporary Photography, the Head On Prize, the Lensculture Street Photography Awards and the Maggie Diaz Photography Prize for Women as well as being awarded a silver medal from the Prix de la Photographie, Paris. In July 2017 her book Tokyo Is Yours was launched alongside an exhibition at Voies Off in Arles, France and was also featured on the British Journal of Photography 

Momento Pro has been printing premium quality books for Australian and New Zealand photographers and artists of all genres since 2004. NAS Artist Books (NASAB)  is a collective of postgraduate students and staff associated with the National Art School, Sydney. It was established to support contemporary investigations within the artist book medium and to promote dialogue around the material and conceptual potentials of Book Arts in Australia. Members include Peter Burgess, Gemma Avery, Mini Graff and Angus Fisher.

Nicky Minus is a cartoonist from Sydney. Her work has appeared in The Lifted Brow, Overland and Resist, an anthology of political comics put together by the art editor of The New Yorker. She has self-published a number of zines and comics and her work has appeared in exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Belfast.

Nell is a Sydney-based Nell born in 1975 in Maitland, NSW. Nell studied at Sydney College of the Arts, The University of California and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. She has exhibited widely in Australia and been awarded residences in Beijing and Rome. Nell is represented by Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney and STATION, Melbourne.

Page Screen Books is a Sydney-based independent publisher of visual essays, artists books and multiples. Founded in 2015 by award-winning designer and writer Zoë Sadokierski as Bookwork Press, the imprint was relaunched in 2017 under the name Page Screen Books. Page Screen Books use photographs, drawings, collages and typography to make visual arguments, disrupt and enhance written texts. The publications result from Zoë’s research-led design practice into the evolution of books in the digital age, as well as collaborations with writers and other designers.

Paper Bark Press (1987 – 2012) was an award-winning publisher ofAustralian poetry and photography — widely collected nationally & internationally. Both photographer Juno Gemes & poet Robert Adamson create handmade artists books collected by major institutions. Their works will be exhibited alongside a collection of rare books.

Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) is a catalyst for innovative and groundbreaking art and culture, giving artists and audiences a glimpse of what is possible. Both a producing and presenting institution, PICA runs a program of exhibitions, contemporary dance, theatre, performance and interdisciplinary projects. PICA promotes, supports and presents contemporary arts and stimulates critical discussion around the arts and broader cultural issues. In many aspects of its operations, PICA might be understood as an incubator: providing resources, mentoring and support for both emerging and mature artists whilst promoting new and emerging ideas, forms and practices to the broader community.

Once there were almost no books about contemporary Australian women artists, so Piper Press published Del Kathryn Barton, Fiona Hall, Tracey Moffatt, Patricia Piccinini, Rosemary Laing, Julie Rrap, and most recently, Bronwyn Oliver. Other Piper Press titles feature a majority of women – Twelve Australian Photo Artists and Half the Sky, the first book about contemporary Chinese women artists.  

Sirius marks a new direction for Piper Press. This title celebrates a Sydney landmark and a community being erased from the landscape. Sirius was built out of the 1970s Green Bans and the Battle for The Rocks, but it is now under threat. Sirius tells an extraordinary story of survival against the odds. Onomatopee playfully frames and manifests our progressive capacity to design culture. At Onomatopee, architects, urban planners, graphic and spatial designers, cultural critics, marketers, artists, politicians and others willing to engage with the meaningfulness of designed culture, get together, within a constructive sphere of nurturing, cultural citizenship, to negotiate and establish our cultural future via design’s playful, political practice.

OSMOS is both a project space in the East Village of Manhattan and a publishing program of artists and photographers. With OSMOS Books, OSMOS Magazine, OSMOS Editions and Exhibitions, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz has developed her independent endeavor into a uniquely integrated concept for international curatorial and editorial activities.

Power Publications was established in 1986 as an academic art publisher operating out of the Power Institute for Art & Visual Culture at the University of Sydney. Since then, it has grown into a leading and award-winning publisher of books on contemporary art and theory, cultural studies, media studies and film and animation. It publishes monographs and collective volumes on art and visual culture, from groundbreaking publications on Asian and contemporary Aboriginal art, to fashion theory and rare English translations of major theoretical interventions. The Photography Department (aka Raffles Photo) encourages students to create printed works throughout their degree, impressing the importance of print in an age of digital technology. We celebrate the diversity and quality of work created by our community of students, staff, and graduates.

The publications I produce are a selection of limited edition artist books that explore the transformation of architectural space and our relationship with the environment. My publishing venture started in 2014 with the release of my first title ‘A brief stroll whilst inspecting architecture’, since then I have continued to explore the transformation of my own work in book form.

SPARKS EDITION is a group built upon creative activities founded by Joonoh Jang & Jihye A. Our works are focused on graphics photography, illustration and sculptures. Since 2017, we started to publish art books in order to share enjoyable artistic experiments.
Recently published art book, Layer is a study on composition made of hand-coloured paper cutouts and line drawing, and results of playing with line, shape and colour to create a female figure in pleasant dancing movement.

Runway is an independent Australian experimental art journal run by a collective of Sydney and internationally-based artists, writers and curators. Runway publishes three times a year and includes feature articles, interviews, artist commissions, reviews, previews and international updates. Each issue is organised around a theme, and all content is commissioned based on proposals submitted in an open callout.

In 2017, Runway launched Conversations, a quick-response platform for the regular publishing of art criticism and commentary. Conversations aims to generate discussion and provide a space of exchange in between, in response to, and beyond Runway’s thrice-annual themed issues.

Ruin Press is an Antepodean Independent Publishing Group specialising in weirder fiction, poetry, artists books and critical writing.

Spooky Books is an independent publisher predominantly focused on the production and dissemination of limited edition artists books. Founded in Brisbane in 2015, Spooky Books is currently based somewhere between Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney working on a variety of publishing projects specialising in contemporary art and photography.

Stephen Dupont is an Australian documentary photographer who produces photographs of fragile cultures and marginalised peoples. He captures the human dignity of his subjects with great intimacy and often in some of the world’s most dangerous regions. His images have received international acclaim for their artistic integrity and valuable insight into the people, culture and communities that have existed for hundreds of years, yet are fast disappearing from our world.

Terra Firma magazine is a non-profit publication focusing on visual communication within contemporary culture. Each year a new issue is published with a thoughtful theme in mind, with collaborators from all around the world. Terra Firma also provides a platform for those who have been published or follow the magazine to share their own self published zines or books, which is a carefully considered curation of small edition publications. As well as showcasing a selection of new and secondhand photobooks/magazines hand selected from Tokyo, Paris and London.

We are a ‘museum without walls’ and our mission is to reveal the world of art to the general public. The name Thames & Hudson links the rivers flowing through London and New York; and this global attitude also applies to the books we produce. We strive to create illustrated books that educate and excite a broad range of readers. Sydney-based organisation Studio A tackles barriers faced by artists living with intellectual disability — in accessing conventional education, professional development pathways & opportunities to achieve success and recognition. The enterprise paves professional pathways for such artists so that they can achieve their artistic & economic aspirations. It also manages an annual exhibition program & facilitates weekly workshops provided by invited contemporary artists, including Antonia Pesenti & Leigh Rigozzi. Studio A supports a variety of artists working within a range of disciplines & thus strategically links Studio A artwork with an equally diverse range of target markets including artist books & zines. Works on sale will include sculptures, graphic novels, screen prints and books from Studio A artists.

The Heavy Collective believes firmly in printed matter and the vitally important role it plays in being a vehicle for transmission. We look at publishing from a place of necessity, integral to photographic literacy. Volume II is a pairing of images and text. A conversation between Photographer and viewer, writer and reader. Starting out of the blocks in 2015 with the release of Volume I, II pushes the dialogue further, putting photographer and writer face to face, landing firmly at the confluence of where images are made and how they are read.

The Rizzeria is a non-profit collective run by people who are designers, artists, zine-makers, print-makers, animators and creative entrepreneurs. We own a two-colour Risograph press which people are welcome to come in and use with the assistance of a volunteer. As well as a print workshop, our space also functions as a retail outlet for Rizzeria members and local artists.

Thorny Devil Press began in 1989, publishing visual poetry, word works and photography by poet and artist Richard Tipping. Our speciality is artist books, postcards, posters, and sculptural multiples including pressed-aluminium metal signs. Publications by Thorny Devil Press have been distributed internationally through both the Museum of Modern Art Store and Printed Matter in New York; and through the Tate Modern in London. Hot off the press in 2017 are collaborations with Artikel Editionen, Berlin and with Redfoxpress, Ireland; and a large-format book of photo-collages by Mazie Karen Turner. Thorny Devil Press is based in Newcastle, NSW.

onestar press and Three Star Books are two publishing houses founded in 2000 and 2007, respectively, dedicated to the production of books and multiples by contemporary artists from different generations, countries and practices.

I work across painting, printmaking and writing. This is mostly about the writing part. Framed against self-help literature, personal essays, quotation books, and inspirational Instagram memes, these books are compiled collections of my individual text artworks. Written in the first person, these works are loosely absurdist, nihilist (¯\_(ツ)_/¯  maybe?), gallows jokes, puns, word-plays, and micro essays. Personal-ish diary-like entries and occasional illustrations are sprinkled though for pep. Ultimately, I guess my work is kind of a jokey punt at reconciling the mystery of existence.

Try Hard Editions is a limited-run photobook publishing initiative. Launching in 2015, Try Hard Editions began as the in-house publishing imprint of Try Hard Magazine, an online photographic journal. Try Hard Editions is please to exhibit their first book: Atlantis by Pedro Ramos, the second monograph by the Portuguese-born, Australian based artist. Atlantis has been exhibited in Basel; London; Madrid; Lisbon & Milan. It was also recently acquired by the New York Public Library for the Spencer Collection, which surveys the illustrated word and book bindings of all periods and all countries and cultures, from medieval manuscripts to contemporary artist’s books.

un Projects is a collective based in Australia that aims to generate independent and critical dialogue around contemporary art, primarily through publishing projects. With a focus on artists, writers and independent practice, un Projects publishes essays, artists’ work and reviews, in print and online. Our flagship publication is the bi-annual un Magazine, founded by Lily Hibberd in 2004. In celebration of a decade of publishing excellence, in 2016 we launched un Anthology 2004-2014: a decade of art & ideas. In 2017 we launched un Extended, digital-only content that includes reviews, a monthly podcast, and dispatches from Australia and the world. 

With the rapid evolution of the photographic medium, images function in particular contexts, whether social, cultural or political. In the Bachelor of Design in Photography at UTS students learn how to recognise these contexts, and use and reinterpret them for their own creative work. Students apply this understanding to the art of image making, under the guidance of expert staff, using world-standard equipment and facilities.

Vanessa Berry is a Sydney-based writer, artist and zine-maker. Her atlas of Sydney, Mirror Sydney, released October 2017, combines essays and hand-drawn maps to present a portrait of the city's unusual spaces, enigmatic traces and hidden stories. She is also the author of the illustrated memoirs Ninety9 and Strawberry Hills Forever. She is one of Australia's best known zine makers and her zines have been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art (in Avoiding Myth and Message: Australian Artists and the Literary World) and the National Gallery of Australia. Her hand-drawn maps have been exhibited at the Museum of Sydney, Penrith Regional Gallery, and Macquarie University Art Gallery.

Eime is a Sydney-based poet who went into theatre, eventually developing the original work into Performance Monologues within sculptural installations in Artist-run Galleries. 

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the very first performance, 5 major works will be presented for the first time in a box set hand-made for the occasion, as well as the launch of the Artist's website. 

Eime will also be presenting an array of new shorter works made at the fair and An Onion Person's Etiquette in celebration of turning 18 years adult.
