Centre of the Centre is a major commission by Australian-born, Paris-based contemporary artist Mel O’Callaghan. Exploring the cycles of regeneration, destruction, and the origins of life, Centre of the Centre was created by O’Callaghan in collaboration with a team of scientists, led by marine geologist Dr Daniel J. Fornari of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), during a research expedition involving the deep-sea research submarine Alvin and autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry at the East Pacific Rise near 9° 50’N, part of the global mid-ocean ridge system.
Dr Fornari is a leading researcher in deep sea geology and oceanographic mapping and imaging technologies. He has participated in over 150 research cruises, including over 100 dives in research submersibles like Alvin, and is the author of more than 130 scientific publications dedicated to volcanic and hydrothermal processes along mid-ocean ridges and on seamounts.
