We are thrilled to share that the redevelopment of The Gunnery has officially begun. Hoardings are up around the building and internal demolition, managed by FDC Construction & Fitout, is well underway. Once completed, Artspace will occupy the entire building for the first time in the organisation’s history. NSW Government has granted Artspace a 35-year lease on the landmark heritage-listed building.

Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin said The Gunnery is a great example of how the NSW Government is transforming the State’s unique heritage assets to provide state-of-the-art contemporary art spaces for exhibitions and studios to support the production and presentation of visual arts.

'From the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct to the renewal of the Sydney Opera House and now The Gunnery, this ground-breaking heritage transformation will be the latest in a long list of projects delivered by the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government – reimagining some of our most iconic heritage buildings to create bespoke cultural spaces for local, interstate and international artists to showcase their wealth of talent,' Mr Franklin said.

Alexie Glass-Kantor, Executive Director at Artspace says, 'It's been a while in the making but it's so exciting this is happening. With new facilities across three floors, including expanded exhibition galleries, a new learning space and an increased number of rent-free artist studios, we are excited to build on our enduring support for artists and audiences. With funding from the NSW Government alongside the 35-year sublease, Artspace can focus on building a future for the next generation. Indeed the Artspace team are thrilled with the progress and we can't wait to share more in the coming weeks and months leading up to our end-of-year reopening.'

The Gunnery is set to reopen in 2023. Find out more about the transformation and stay updated here.
