Applications are now open for the 2023 NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging)

Artspace and Create NSW are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2023 NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging).

Valued at $30,000, this Fellowship is offered by Create NSW to enable a visual artist at the beginning of their career the opportunity to undertake a self-directed program of professional development. A shortlist of artists will be selected by an independent panel of peers managed by Create NSW to participate in an exhibition curated by Artspace, at Carriageworks.

This year, Artspace has partnered with Carriageworks to exhibit the Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) while The Gunnery building undertakes a major redevelopment supported by the NSW Government.

Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin said the NSW Government is proud to be supporting the sector and encouraging artists through valuable fellowship and exhibition opportunities. “NSW is home to many exceptional visual artists and it’s wonderful to see new artists emerge. I urge and encourage all early-career artists apply for this incredible opportunity,” Mr Franklin said.

Create NSW Interim Chief Executive, Annette Pitman said the Fellowship, now in its twenty-sixth year, has launched the careers of NSW emerging visual artists.

'The NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) has been a successful platform for nurturing the immense talent within NSW’s visual arts community, and I’m pleased to welcome applications from the next generation of artists. I’m excited to see Artspace and Carriageworks collaborate to present the Visual Arts  Fellowship (Emerging) exhibition in 2023, giving these promising artists exposure at  one of Sydney’s premier cultural spaces.'

The Fellowship is Artspace’s key exhibition for profiling the dynamism and breadth of emerging contemporary artistic practice in NSW, and builds upon our ongoing commitment to supporting emerging artists through curatorial development and dialogue.

The curatorium for the 2023 NSW VAFE will include Artspace’s Executive Director, Alexie Glass-Kantor; Curator, Talia Linz; and Associate Curator, Sarah Rose, alongside Carriageworks staff.

Alexie Glass-Kantor, Executive Director, Artspace said ‘The NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) remains a key exhibition for Artspace, reflective of our ongoing commitment to support generations of emerging artists through curatorial development and dialogue. We are thrilled to be partnering with Carriageworks to present the 2023 edition and encourage artists of all disciplines to apply for this remarkable professional development opportunity.’

We encourage all eligible visual artists to apply for the Fellowship, which supports the professional development of artists in NSW, enabling recipients to undertake activities including travel, mentorships, internships, courses, research and the creation of new work.

Previous recipients of the Fellowship include Eddie Abd, Dennis Golding, Shivanjani Lal, Claudia Nicholson, Consuelo Cavaniglia, Heath Franco, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, Jamie North and Soda Jerk.

Applications close Tuesday 7 February 2023, 5pm AEDT
