Tamara Baillie works primarily in sculpture and installation to explore personal and collective narratives around identity and memory. Born to a family of boat makers and fishermen, her work is informed by ongoing investigations into her family tree.

This Ideas Platform project presents a series of new sculptural installations that extend on the artist's previous use of sugar-cured muslin and respond to Sydney’s rich maritime history. During her recent month-long residency at Artspace, Baillie was mentored by artist Jonathan Jones, exploring both European and Indigenous uses of these waterways and the early interactions between these cultures.

Baillie was recently awarded an Arts South Australia Emerging Mentorship and has an exhibition at the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia in November 2016. In 2015 Baillie was invited to participate in Shimmer, a research and exhibition project of the Tarnanthi Festival of ATSI Art. She has previously exhibited at the Australian Experimental Art Foundation, Art Gallery of Tasmania, South Australian Museum, Adelaide Festival Centre and FELTspace.

Baillie is a member of onesixteenth, an Adelaide-based Indigenous visual arts collective that supports and promotes contemporary urban Indigenous art and artists and encourages diversity of practice and experimentation within the sector.
