Join Artspace Curator, Talia Linz in conversation with artist Join Artspace Curator, Talia Linz in conversation with Consuelo Cavaniglia, Nadia Hernández and Spence Messih at 1.30pm, Saturday 4 November 2023, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
The artists will tease out the relationships between their work that embrace colour and form in strategic ways, enabling alternative viewpoints into enquiries around space, the body and complex socio-cultural histories.
Nadia Hernández has a multi-disciplinary practice that reflects a process of bearing witness to the loss of home and the symbolic power of memory and memorialisation. Informed by her experience as a Venezuelan woman living in Australia, and positioning herself both within and outside the Venezuelan diaspora, Hernández makes art as a means to connect with a sense of place that exists beyond psychic and geographic boundaries.
Spence Messih has a practice that, through sculpture, glass and text, speaks broadly to sites of pressure, materiality, and language, and more specifically about these things in relation to Messih’s own experience. Messih draws on material tactics of abstraction such as repetition, transformation and cuts/breaks as a way to claim presence within absence and self-recognition within misrecognition.
Consuelo Cavaniglia is an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on how we see and understand space. Her work often employs technically simple visual effects to distort perception and unsettle the relationship between viewer and space.
Moderated by Talia Linz, senior curator at Artspace Sydney, this panel discussion is held in conjunction with the exhibitions Kandinsky and Georgiana Houghton: Invisible Friends, which explore the power of colour and abstraction in art.
