TV Moore

Now is not the time to make new work. It is the time to look at everything that led to now and ask: What did I miss? This work, Apocatopia vol 1, was made in Los Angeles during US President George W. Bush’s second term. America was flailing, mired in the foreign wars it had started. The country was less divided than it is now, but I can’t shake the déjà vu.

At the time, I thought about a country whose faith in itself had grown tragic. Here was a citizen preacher – a stand-in for salvation – singing against the world. He was preaching to a country that mistook itself for the promised land, telling them they would get there soon.

I remember thinking about war, plan crashes and the Book of Revelation. It felt odd to me to consider how many people have those words as the last words in their mouths. Unconsciously, I knew this work wasn’t finished – I knew the words could protest another moment. That’s why I called it Vol.1.

Some archives are important to re visit and reimagine.

Artist bio

TV Moore ( Timothy Vernon Moore) works across a range of media, including video, painting, sculpture, installation, photography, animation and theatrical forms. He received his MFA from CalArts in 2006.

Moore emerged as part of a generation of artists who pioneered a new wave of video art in Australia in the early 2000s. Since this time, his practice has been characterised by fervent experimentation, as well as formal and conceptual innovations that critically considered technology and methodologies across high and low culture. Using psychological space, in narrative and non-narrative structures, Moore's work seeks out stories within stories. He meshes history and mythology, exploring the individual in the context of group ritual and thinking.

Moore’s work has been nationally and internationally recognised. Career highlights include a survey show TV Moore’s Rum Jungle at Campbelltown Arts Centre and the solo museum show With Love & Squalor at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. He is a winner of the Anne Landa Award for Video and New Media Arts at the Art Gallery of NSW and a recipient of the Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship. Moore has participated in numerous group exhibitions and biennales, including the 16th and 19th Biennale of Sydney; the Busan Biennale; T1: The Pantagruel Syndrome, Turin Triennale, co-curated by Francesco Bonami and Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea; among others. He currently lives and works in New York. In 2020 he was offered a year-long residency at Artspace, Sydney.
