Artspace would like to express our sadness on the passing of artist Sydney Ball. We are honoured to be currently showing Syd’s work as part of Superposition of three types, including his last piece Chromix Lumina #12, 2016. In the lead up to the exhibition we were lucky enough to visit Syd in his magical studio among the gum trees, engaging in spirited conversations about the ongoing importance of his beloved abstraction.
Syd’s extensive contribution to Australian art is truly remarkable. Widely considered a pioneer in abstraction, his inventiveness and fascination with colour and form is as evident in his latest work as at the start of his more-than-50-year career.
Our thoughts are with Lynne Eastaway, his dedicated gallery Sullivan+Strumpf, as well as his family, friends, students, and lifelong admirers.
