About Koji Ryui

Koji Ryui’s playful sensibility combined with his use of common everyday objects invites a deep contemplation of how ordinary materials may transcend their physicality through minimal gestures. Blurring the border between animate and inanimate, seen and unseen, Ryui mischievously explores the delicate space between reality and perception through often humorously subtle object interventions.

Since his inclusion in Primavera 2006, Ryui participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at contemporary art galleries and museums inclduing Artspace, Sydney; Gertrude Contemporary and MUMA, Melbourne; and PICA, Perth. In 2013 Ryui exhibited in Roppongi Crossing 2013: Out of Doubt, at Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan, which significantly marked his first exhibition in the country of his birth. This was followed by the Australian Council Skills and Arts Development Tokyo Residency Program in 2015-2016, during he researched and investigated traditional uses of objects in ritualistic spaces. Ryui is represented by Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney.
